Meet The Unsung Hero Of Hair Health: Your Scalp

You wouldn’t use shampoo to wash your face or shaving cream to brush your teeth. These features aren’t just heavy hitters when it comes to your appearance—they’re also major indicators of your overall health. What you may not know, however, is that there’s an often over-looked player that deserves to be part of your bathroom routine: your scalp.

Your scalp isn’t like the basement of a home, something you can close the door on and forget. It’s actually more like the rich, bio diverse earth that supports an entire ecosystem. Maximize its health, and you maximize the appearance of your hair. Fortunately, here at Aveda Men St. Petersburg, we’ve launched Pramasana, a new scalp care line that helps you do just that. Read on to learn more about why your scalp is the unsung hero of hair care.

Meet the microbiome

No, not Bio-Dome, the 1996 movie starring Pauly Shore. The microbiome is a collection of micro-organisms (specifically, hundreds of types of bacteria) that’s unique to you. These friendly bacteria are found everywhere on your body, and without them, we couldn’t digest food, regulate our immune system or fight off infections. You can probably guess where we’re going with this: the microbiome exists on your scalp, too. And if it gets out of whack, you may see symptoms like itchiness, irritation and even hair loss. The Pramasana system is specifically designed to regulate the scalp microbiome by balancing sebum levels and protecting it from environmental aggressors like pollution and free radicals.

How Pramasana works

Pramasana is appropriate for many scalp concerns: dryness, dandruff, hair thinning, oiliness or redness/irritation among them. Pramasana is a three-step system that you can try in the salon or at home. It harnesses naturally derived seaweed extract, tamanu oil and lacto bacillus (a friendly bacteria that’s part of the human microbiome) to balance and nurture your scalp.

Step 1: the brush

You’ll start by giving yourself a vigorous scalp massage with the Pramasana Exfoliating Scalp Brush. Begin brushing at the temples and move around the head. The resulting massage promotes microcirculation, which brings nutrient-rich blood to your scalp, and sloughs off dead skin cells and pollutants that may smother new growth.

Step 2: the cleanser

Next, you’ll wash your scalp with Pramasana Purifying Scalp Cleanser, which is specifically formulated to deeply cleanse the scalp, removing pollutants and instantly balancing sebum levels. Really get in there and massage your scalp with the cleanser for two minutes (it feels good and your scalp will thank you). Follow with your regular shampoo and conditioner.

Step three: balance and protect

Finally, you’ll apply Pramasana Protective Scalp Concentrate, the seaweed extract, tamanu oil and lactobacillus-rich concentrate that helps your scalp look and feel balanced. And since your scalp is the foundation for healthy hair, don’t be surprised if you have an extra-good hair day.
